A Scale for Measuring Teachers’ Mathematics-Related Beliefs: A Validity and Reliability Study

Purnomo, Yoppy Wahyu

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a scale of teacher beliefs related to mathematics, namely, beliefs about the nature of mathematics, mathematics teaching, and assessment in mathematics learning. A scale development study was used to achieve it. The draft scale consisted of 54 items in which 16 items related to beliefs about the nature of mathematics, 23 items related to beliefs about the teaching of mathematics, and 15 items related to beliefs about assessment in mathematics learning. At the first phase, 252 primary school teachers participated and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed to evaluate the structure of the scale factor. There were two factors at each scale resulted from the analysis. At the second phase, 350 primary school teachers participated and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to confirm the factors resulted from the EFA. The result of CFA indicated that the established model had sufficient fit indices. In addition, each factor had an adequate internal consistency coefficient, which was in the range of 0.715â0.787. Thus, this scale could be a satisfactory tool to assess teachers’ mathematics-related beliefs. Subsequent studies could combine these three scales into an integrated scale, to simplify statistical analysis.

Examining pre-service elementary school teacher beliefs and instructional practices in mathematics class

Purnomo, Yoppy Wahyu

The gap between theory and practice has become a critical issue in the effort of improving the learning of mathematics. Beliefs may have been one of the contributing factors to the widening of the gap between theory and practice. Therefore, examining the relationship between beliefs and practices in mathematics is crucial to gain an overview of the preparation of potential teacher candidates and the development of teacher education in the future. This study aims to examine the relationship between beliefs held by pre-service elementary school teachers and the instructional practices in mathematics class. This study employs the case study that focuses on one of the pre-service elementary school teachers who is undertaking practical field experience in the 2015/2016 academic year. The findings of this study indicate that the instructional practices do not necessarily reflect the beliefs that are held. On the other hand, beliefs about the nature of mathematics influence more dominant than the other beliefs against instructional practices.

A HYBRID CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION IN SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHER EDUCATION (SLTE): A CRITICAL REFLECTION OF TEACHER EDUCATORS

Nani Solihati, Nani

Hybrid instruction, which combines face-to-face classroom interaction and virtual activities, has been a growing interest for many teachers in universities, particularly those in teacher education programmes. This article
presents my colleague’s as well as my own critical reflections on our experience with practising hybrid classroom instruction in SLTE in a private university
in Indonesia. Within this hybrid classroom, Google Classroom (GC) was incorporated as a companion of the face-to-face (F2F) classroom learning sessions of twenty-two preservice teachers taking the curriculum and materials development (CMD) module. To help with our reflection, we took notes during our observation and asked the students to write a journal after each of our teaching sessions. We highlight several benefits and challenges when incorporating GC in a hybrid classroom. Implications for the practice of a hybrid classroom in
SLTE, particularly within the Indonesian higher education context, are also offered.

Facilitating Students’ Creativity in an EFL Writing Classroom: Voices from the Field

Facilitating Students’ Creativity in an EFL Writing Classroom: Voices from the Field

Mulyono, Herri

This article documents an English as a foreign language (EFL) classroom writing activity to promote students’ creativity. This writing activity had two main objectives: to provide students with writing activities that would promote their practical use of written English language as a means of communication, and to facilitate their creativity in engaging with and solving problems in their social community. A real-world pedagogic writing task was developed to achieve these two objectives. The activity was carried out in a junior secondary school extra-curricular activity with sixteen students from Years 7 and 8. Students’ perceptions of the writing activity were positive, and their awareness of social issues in the community had improved after participating in the activity.

The Complex Relationship between Teachers’ Mathematics-related Beliefs and their Practices in Mathematics Class

Purnomo, Yoppy Wahyu

Mathematics-related beliefs play an important role in giving a teacher directions for taking decisions and for their behavior in a mathematics class. Therefore, the purposes of this research are to reveal the profile of teachers’ mathemat-ics-related beliefs, the consistency among belief dimensions, teachers’ practical profile in a mathematics class, and the consistency between beliefs and teachers’ practices in a mathematics class. This research used surveys with a cross-sec-tional design to collect data from 325 elementary school teachers in Jakarta. Teachers’ beliefs instruments and teachers’ practices in mathematics class were used to collect data. The findings of this research indicate that teachers tend to be constructivism-oriented but are not accompanied with suitable practices in mathematics class. Moreover, complex relationships also occur in both belief dimensions and in their relationships with the practices in a mathematics class.

REPRESENTASI GENDER DALAM NOVEL CABAUKAN, KEMBANG JEPON, KERUDUNG MERAH KIRMIZI

Prima Gusti Yanti, PGY

This study used a qualitative approach to content analysis techniques. The approach
used is a feminist literary literature. Aim of this study to find the representation of
gender in the novel Cabaukan, Kembang Jepon, Kerudung Merah Kirmizi created by
Remy Sylado. Criteria reveal gender issues are ( 1 ) the behavior , activities , thoughts
female figures , ( 2 ) suppression experienced by female figures . The research data was
collected from three Remy Sylado’s novel, namely Cabaukan, Kembang Jepon,
Kerudung Merah Kirmizi.
The results of this study indicate gender representation differentiated between the
colonial period and the period after independence. The behavior of women is found
behavioral mimicry as an activity to equate the situation with the invaders. Activities
undertaken in the field of women are still largely domestic. Thought leaders during the
colonial women still around family life, and in the aftermath of independence has not
changed optimally. During the colonial period there is the oppression of women in the
domestic sphere, which caused the women do not have the economic power and when
in public spaces experienced more sexual repression, both of invaders and of
indigenous men. It was more due to ignorance and poverty. In the period after
independence women have been able to demonstrate the existence of self to make a
living in accordance with the skills possessed, but still there is oppression in the
domestic and public spaces.

Keywords: feminism, gender representation, public space, domestic space
